THE CRUCIFIX ON THE WALL

 
They got an 18 inch wooden crucifix
on their wedding day. Grandmothers
used to give things like that as wedding gifts.
 
His wife didn’t know what it was and instead
wondered how much green they got that day.
The crucifix stayed in its box on top of a closet.
 
It moved to the top shelf of two more closets
in their first two houses after five years of
apartment living without any kids, but ….
 
Grandmothers know what they are doing ….
It went on the wall – when his kid died  - and
the priest talked about the crucifix at his funeral.
