5 FINGERS

Why 5 fingers
In God’s mind,
why 5 fingers?

In our minds
why 5 fingers?
Why this evolution?

Left hand,
right hand….
Why 5 fingers?

Pinky and thumb ….
Index finger ….
Those 2 other fingers ….

To grab, to hold,
to scratch, to tap,
to sign our name….

To watch people
use their hands –
sign language and texting.

Amazing, to look
at our hands and
wonder: why 5 fingers?

SOMETIMES ON A PLANE

Sometimes alone on a plane
or in some place by ourselves,
people talk to people they
don’t know. They tell them
things they don’t even mention
to close friends or family.
They mention where they
are broken – or how the world
is treating them or where
they need the glue called love.

“DOMI”

I remember learning the Latin word, “Domi”
in my Second Year of High School.  When
asked where someone was, sometimes I
heard the answer, “Domi!” It meant “Drop out”.

After hearing it a dozen times I had it.
I was speaking Latin. I was thinking in Latin.
We ended up with years and years of Latin,
but I only became at home with one word,  “Domi”.

Our textbooks for philosophy and theology
were in Latin – but sorry to say I used
translations and dictionaries and guesses -
except for one word I was at home with: “Domi".

FAVORITE  WORD

I once heard an English teacher say
that his favorite word was
“oleomargarine”. Ooo. Interesting.

I don’t remember anything else
he taught us, but I do remember,
“What’s your  favorite word?”

That happened in a classroom
in the 1950’s. I came up with
many words in the years ever since.

bivouac, bazooka, bayou, bayberry,
ballad, backbone, burnish and those
are just words that begin with “b”.
