QUIET

Some people talk too much.

Some people don’t talk enough.

Some people don’t know how to speak up.

Some people don’t know how to shut up.

Some people don’t know how to be still.

Some people don’t listen.

Some people talk so they don’t have to listen.

Some people don’t talk – but they don’t listen. They are talking to themselves about what they did yesterday or what they are going to do tomorrow.

Become still!


Breathe!

Be! Just be! Just be there!

Relax! Most times you don’t have to say anything.

Andre Kostelanetz, the great conductor of New York Philharmonic fame, once said, “One of the greatest sounds of them all – and to me it is sound – is utter, complete silence.”

Our Masses need more stillness – more silence.

Way back in 1955, Romano Guardini in his book, Meditations Before Mass, stressed the need for “stillness …. attentiveness …. composure …. tranquility ….”

Do I know how to quiet down and become still?

We need to come to Mass to collect our scattered and shattered selves. This is what “recollection” means.

Coughing and other noise in church must have bothered Guardini, because he writes:

“What does stillness really imply? It implies above all that speech end and silence prevail, that no other sounds – of movements, of turning pages, of coughing and throat-clearing – be audible. There is no need to exaggerate. Men live, and living things move; a forced outward conformity is no better than restlessness. Nevertheless, stillness is still, and it comes only if seriously desired. If we value it, it brings us joy; if not, discomfort. People are often heard to say: ‘But I can’t help coughing’ or ‘I can’t kneel quietly’; yet once stirred by a concert or lecture they forget all about coughing and fidgeting. That stillness proper to the most beautiful things in existence dominates, a quiet area of attentiveness in which the beautiful and truly important reign.”

Worship takes place not only in great cathedrals and churches, but also in one’s “inner room.”

Romano Guardini continues a few pages later, “This requires the spaciousness, freedom, and pure receptiveness of that inner ‘clean-swept room’ which silence alone can create. The constant talker knows no such room within himself; hence he cannot know truth.”

Teachers of prayer and meditation like to start off by telling folks, “Breathe! Catch your breath. Calm down. Feel your body in the seat you’re sitting in. Make yourself comfortable. Become centered.”

Often there is too much inner noise and clutter and shuffling around and coughing in our soul.

Often there is too much outer noise, too much business, and at times too many “out-loud” prayers being said before, during and after Mass.

Some people love to say the Rosary out loud before or after Mass. Some folks love quiet before and after Mass.

We need to become still.

As Psalm 46:10 is often translated, “Be still and know that I am God.”

Many liturgies have too much “business” going on.

Sometimes I wish Jesus would come to the temple, throw out the money changers and say, “This is my Father’s house. Why are you making it a den of thieves?”

V.V. Rozanov, wrote, “All religions will pass, but this will remain: simply sitting in a chair and looking in the distance.”

Shelley Winters, the actress, once said, “Every now and then, when you’re on stage, you hear the best sound a player can hear. It’s a sound you can’t get in movies or television. It is the sound of a wonderful deep silence that means you’ve hit them where they live.”

The first word
you spoke from the cross was “Father.”
That’s the first word
so many of us
spoke as children.

“Father…”
How do I feel about my father,
my real-life father,
the man who planted the seed
in the earth - my mother?
How do I really feel about him?

Psychologists tell us
that many of us spend our whole lives
fighting authorities,
fighting husbands,
fighting men,
while we’re really fighting our fathers.
They tell us
that many of us spend our whole lives
loving,
playing countless games,
with others,
with husbands,
with lovers,
while we’re really trying
to reach out and touch
and be touched by our fathers.

“Forgive...”
the next word you spoke
from the cross, Jesus, was “forgive.”

Some of us go through life
unable to forgive that man,
our father.
“I’ll never forgive my father
for what he did to me,
for what he did to my mother.
He never was home enough.
He never loved enough.
He loved my sister more.”

Father, forgive him
for he did not know
what he was doing.
Father, forgive me
for I don’t know
what I am doing.

Forgiveness!
Can I forgive those who cross me,
who double-cross me,
who nail me to the cross each day?

Can I forgive those who neglect me,
who shove me,
who bother me?
Can I forgive those who nail me to my job, to my family,
to my marriage,
to situations I just can’t stand?

Forgive?
Father, how many times do you expect me to forgive?
Do you really want 70 times 7?

And, Jesus, you looked out from the cross
over the crowd.
You looked and you saw me.
You looked out
and you saw the Jews and the Romans.
You saw Auschwitz and My Lai.
Jesus, you looked out and saw the morning headlines,
the graft and the bribery ,
the robberies and the rapes,
and you said,
“Father, forgive them,
for they do not know
what they are doing.”

What?
Are you crazy?
Me forgive her? Me forgive him?
Me forgive them ?
They knew exactly what they were doing.

Forgive ...
You’ve got to be kidding.
They all know exactly what they are doing.

Jesus, are you asking me
to forgive those on welfare,
those I have to pay taxes for,
those who don’t want to work,
those who “rip me off”?
Is that exactly what you are asking?

Jesus, are you asking me
to forgive those who don’t plan,
who don’t think,
who don’t know,
to forgive those who keep me waiting,
those who use up all the hot water
in the shower,
who play their stereos too loud,
those who cause me so much trouble?

Is that what you are asking?
Is that what you are about?
Is that your point?

Why?
Why should I forgive?

Doesn’t forgiveness make matters worse?
Doesn’t all this “forgiveness” really hurt people,
really keep them in their ignorance,
really cause more trouble for those
around them?

What about that?
What about me?

But wait a minute.
What about me?
Come to think about it,
when it comes to me,
I like to hear that word “forgive”
once in awhile,
especially when I’m the guilty one.

I guess you’re right.
“Forgive”
is a beautiful sound,
a beautiful word,
a beautiful verb,
when I’ve made the crucial mistake,
the unforgivable slip of the tongue.
It’s the word I want to hear.
What a beautiful use of the tongue,
“I forgive you.”

“Forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
Yes. I guess I’ve said that
a million times,
but I didn’t know
the words meant that.
I didn’t know what I was saying.
Father forgive me,
for I didn’t know what I was saying.


Forgiveness …
Jesus, stop there.
You’re saying too much already.
Jesus, you know too much.
Jesus, you see too much.
Forgiveness...
Jesus, I’m only beginning to understand
the meaning of the word.
Maybe someday I’ll even learn to forgive myself.
Jesus, you see right through me,
through my blindness.
Jesus, you are asking too too much.
Jesus, you are invading my privacy,
my territory.
I’m finding you too much.
I guess I want to stay blind.

WHAT DO WE EXPECT?


At the heart of every difficulty we have with others is the problem of expectations. We feel that our problem people should act differently. “Why can’t they change?” “Why can’t they be the way we expect them to be?” “Why don’t they live up to our expectations?”

As we saw in the last chapter, a good counselor will help us to realize that “people problems” are the main problems everyone faces. If we ask any manager, bishop, bus driver, usher, teacher, they will all tell us that “thing problems” are easy; it’s “people problems” that disturb them and take up most of their energy.

When we reveal our problem to a counselor, what we are actually saying is the following: “This other person (Nancy, Tom, our son-in-law, our husband/wife) is not living up to our expectations. We are expecting a rose garden, but maybe they never promised us one.”

College students expect the final exams to deal only with questions that were stressed in class. Husbands expect their wives to have the same sexual outlook as they do. Parents expect their children to marry persons only after their final approval. Grandparents expect their children and their children’s children to drop in at least once a month, or at least to give them a call. Idealists expect other people to live up to their idealistic principles, and complain when people don’t.

Problems in this area can arise in various ways:

a. When our expectations are not met.
b. When we try to force people to meet our expectations.
c. When we begin to believe it’s our fault that other people are not living up to our expectations.
d. When we start to think that certain other people don’t like or love us when they fail to live up to our expectations.
e. When we are not aware of our own or others expectations.

Every person then is a box of expectations. As we have already seen, we need someone, a good friend, a counselor who will get us to open up that box and pour the contents out on the table. We need to become aware of our own expectations.

REASONABLE AND UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS

Some of our expectations are reasonable and some are unreasonable. This is basic common sense, but often it is not understood. So we continue to be frustrated with wives, husbands, children, teachers, leaders, because they are not living up to the expectations we set up for them to meet. What’s worse, we never tell them.

To help us sort out our thinking in this area, here is a list of questions to answer. A simple R (for reasonable) or U (for unreasonable) will do.

· Is it reasonable or unreasonable for Catholic parents to think it’s their fault that a son got divorced and is now getting remarried to a divorced woman?
· Is it reasonable or unreasonable to expect people never to have bad days?
· Is it reasonable or unreasonable to presume that people will make mistakes while driving, have accidents, and even cause deaths?
· Is it reasonable or unreasonable to expect husbands and wives to change and develop new ideas, dream new dreams, and set new values after they are married?
· Is it reasonable or unreasonable for a mother to expect her son and daughter-in-law to drop over with the children every Sunday afternoon?
· Is it reasonable or unreasonable for parents to think it’s their fault that their children no longer attend church services?
· Is it reasonable or unreasonable to expect a 67-year-old priest to celebrate Mass like a 27-year-old priest?

Most of the above questions can be answered without any difficulty. But despite this, some of our own answers will differ from those of others. We all have different expectations; and various circumstances in our personal lives will color what we think is reasonable or unreasonable. This is why it is so important to talk over our problems and expectations with a close friend. He or she will help us discover what is best for all concerned.

Let’s look now at three areas of our lives where expectations -reasonable and unreasonable - play such an important part.

In Marriage Relationships

On their wedding day brides and grooms say, “I do” with many and varied expectations in mind. If they reach their 25th Wedding Anniversary, they may repeat their vows in a solemn ceremony. What has happened to their young dreams and expectations? Some of them have been realized, some not. It is hoped that through the years their expectations have become more realistic, and that they themselves and their dreams are now being fulfilled.

Twenty-five years of living together ought to make a difference. Each day should make a difference. Marshall McLuhan once said that marriage, like any other relationship “must be remade by the contracting parties every day. It’s a terrible illusion in many people’s lives that if they don’t match each other exactly, they ought to break up. They don’t seem to consider the possibility of making as an alternative to matching.”

William James, an American psychologist and philosopher, wrote: “Whenever two people meet, there are really six people present. There is each man as he sees himself, each man as the other person sees him, and each man as he really is.” This same idea is also true of marriage. Soon after the wedding day, both partners begin to discover:

He is different than she thought he was.
She is different than he thought she was.
He is different than he thought he was.
She is different than she thought she was.

Movements like Marriage Encounter encourage couples to discuss this point with each other. Did Joe fall in love with the real person of Jane or only with the mask she presented before marriage? Did Jane fall in love with the real Joe? It is an unreasonable expectation for couples to enter marriage thinking that they have fully discovered their real identities. That’s why both partners need a good sense of adventure and a good sense of humor. They also need the good sense to communicate with each other – especially concerning their expectations in the major areas of marriage: money, sex, and in-laws. Married couples should, therefore, arrange for sufficient time on a regular basis to clarify all the expectations they have of each other.

Unfortunately, however, many married people spend frustrating years fuming inwardly, talking to themselves and not talking to their partners about their lives together. Their bodies may be friends, but their emotions are total strangers.

Divorce spells out the ultimate announcement that two people have not met each other’s expectations. It could also mean that they have given up trying to clarify or renegotiate their expectations of each other. In any case, boredom has set in. The dream they had on their wedding day has become a nightmare. They want out.

In Family Relationships

Often, the most difficult people in children’s lives are their parents. Often, too, the most difficult people in parents’ lives are their children.

Much is expected from people who live in community. When these people are family, expectations increase a thousand fold. So children have huge expectations of their parents, and parents have huge expectations of their children.

Some are reasonable expectations; some are unreasonable. If ever there is a need for reflecting, talking things over with each other, and discussing problems with a counselor, it is here in this area of relationships between parents and children.

And the problems do not always cease when Junior goes off to college or gets married or leaves home. There are too many people in their fifties still trying to live up to the unreasonable expectations of their parents - sometimes long after their parents have died. And, on the other hand, there are people in their thirties making unreasonable demands of their parents. They expect parents to be permanent stand-by baby sitters or they constantly impose on their parents when, through their own stupidity, they are in a bind. “Good ole dad and mom will bail us out again.” There are people in their fifties who still get angry with a parent who asks how things are going. They seem to think it unreasonable for parents to show that they still love them.

Perhaps we have met doctors, lawyers, nuns, teachers who are unhappy in their professions. They “chose” these careers because “mommy” or “daddy” expected them to do so. Their unhappiness stems from resentment of their parents and anger at themselves for not speaking out when they had the chance. Most of us, too, have met people who married a “second choice” because the first choice didn’t come up to their parents’ expectations. Countless novels, plays, movies, and afternoon TV stories are based on such unfortunate circumstances. And the same dramas are being acted out daily in the homes and I hearts of numerous families. Sometimes there is an even more complicated “soap opera” taking place in a given home than on the television screen.

Expectations of parents and children cause many of life’s difficulties. Each generation – like each country – wants to be free, to be liberated. Parents need to cut the umbilical cord and the apron strings. Children need to go to school, to camp, to college; they need to be exposed to all the traditional ways of learning so they can discover for themselves how to stand alone – away from mom and dad and home.

We all can learn much from a certain film recently produced for teenagers and parents. It is about a mama bear and her two baby bears. When she feels they are big enough to be on their own, she leads them to a big tree and makes them climb it. Then she starts to move away. Naturally, the cubs climb back down the tree to follow their mama. But mama bear turns and growls at them. They scramble back up the tree. Once more mama bear moves away. The cubs cling to the tree and watch her disappear into the woods. But she is only hiding. Both cubs wait a bit longer and then slowly climb down the tree to go in search of mama. But mama bear comes roaring out of the bushes and scares them up the tree once again. The same thing happens a third time. Then the film shows the mama bear walking away alone into the woods. Her two little ones are now on their own.

Teenagers are usually fascinated by this film. They know (perhaps they can’t put it in words) that this story is their story.

The ancient Greek dramatists taught a corresponding lesson in their plays. When adolescent boys and girls in ancient times went to see a play like Orestes, they saw on the stage what was happening in their hearts and minds. They discovered through a play that we all have guilt feelings about wanting to leave home: that it’s normal to want to be free, and that it’s normal for parents to hold back.

Letting go and holding on – these are the problems parents and children must face. Behind the questions of curfew, drinking, drugs, school marks, allowance, use of the car, dating, college, marriage, visits from the children, and old age loneliness is this ever-present dilemma of expectations.

In Parish Relationships

Besides marriage and family relationships, another key area where this issue of expectations presents itself is the local parish.

People often expect a priest who is quite limited in his speaking ability to preach homilies he really cannot give. Mr. Michael Perfection sits there in church on a given Sunday, frustrating himself with this unreasonable expectation he has of Father Severity. The following Sunday he goes to a later Mass hoping the homilist will be a different priest. But who walks down the aisle? Yes, it’s Father Severity again. So Mr. Perfection uses his head. The next Saturday, he has his young daughter call the rectory to ask which Mass Father Younger will be celebrating. He attends the 11:30 Mass with high expectations about Father Younger. Once more he hears a poor homily. Father Younger just didn’t have it that day. This time Mr. Perfection is really angry, because he knows Father Younger can preach well. He has bragged about him to the men at work. (But if Mr. Perfection really thought about it, he would remember that Father Younger preaches well only on those few Sundays following his return from his yearly retreat.)

Often at parish council meetings this problem of reasonable and unreasonable expectations presents difficulties. People expect the pastor to do this and say that. Above all, he is not allowed to talk about money. If he does that, four people will get mad. Others expect the meeting to end at 9:00 P.M. sharp, as agreed upon, and it’s now 9:24. Three people sit there angry, because that nun over there is not wearing her veil. The president is angry at five people who aren’t even there. Three of those five actually prepared the agenda and never even showed up or called. The rest are uptight because Nancy (remember her) won’t shut up!

The whole parish council, perhaps the whole parish, should reserve a special time for talking over their expectations of each other. Some groups have tried this. They take a large piece of paper and tape it to the wall. On the top they put in bold letters words like, “PASTOR” or “USHERS” or “NUNS” or “PARISH COUNCIL MEMBERS.” Each member of the group then declares what he or she expects of the above persons and their roles. After all have had their say, the entire group votes by placing an “R” (for reasonable) or a “U” (for unreasonable) after each expectation.

Would it be possible for every parish to do something like this? This may be an unreasonable expectation - because it demands a huge amount of trust. It would depend very much upon the people involved. If the parish council president or the pastor or a few of those present are extremely difficult people, they might kill the idea immediately. And if Sister No-veil is present, she might be crushed if people listed their expectations of “NUNS” as “always available” - only to hear someone say: “But that’s unreasonable. She’s never around here on weekends.”

Some groups, however, have a high level of trust. They would be able to put names like, “Father Severity” or “Father Younger” or “Nancy” at the top of the list and be extremely fair in evaluating their expectations of each particular person. Many groups have not reached this stage of trust, but every group in a parish can at least start the ball rolling with: “Let’s check out all our expectations on this issue or for this program to see whether they are reasonable or
not.”

SUMMARY

Becoming aware of this dynamic of expectations – reasonable or unreasonable -will help clarify many issues involved in marriage, family, and parish relationships. If we find ourselves using these terms in everyday speech, then we’re beginning to work these ideas into our lives. If we find people starting to use them in response to us, then we know that communication is improving in our search for a better understanding of how to deal with difficult people.

The first time someone teaches a kid to put a conch shell up to her ear and she does and she discovers the wonder of the ocean in a shell ....

The first time someone sees a field of woolly sheep dressed in gray white Irish sweaters munching on sweet grass on a green hillside ....

The first time a person falls in love and finds there is nobody around to talk to about these wonderful feelings, because they don’t even know what feelings really are yet ....

The first time a kid gets her own yo-yo and makes it “walk” on the school yard macadam in front of her friends ....

The first time a little girl sitting in the back of a family van sees a rainbow after the rain and shouts to everyone to look out the window, and the car is filled with “Wows!” and her father is able to pull the van off to the side of the road to see the rainbow as a family, not just out a window, but on the big screen of the eastern sky ....

The first time a boy discovers that you can make rocks skip along a lake by simply finding flat rocks and throwing them low and sidearm and close to the water ....

The first time a child sees fireworks on the Fourth of July together with a couple of thousand people “oohing” and “aahing” at each new burst and splash and crash of lights and sparks in the dark summer sky ....

The first time a boy has his own water gun, and he and his father have a great fight -- in front of their house after supper -- his father with a small light green plastic water pistol -- the boy with a Superblaster both of which his father had bought that afternoon on the way home from work and his mother is laughing as she is looking out the front window watching her husband and her son having a great time ....

The first time kids go to an Art Museum on a class trip and discover big people’s drawings, paintings and sculptures -- and one little girl has a dream ....

The first time a kid goes on a roller coaster ride and his parents won’t go on it with him, “It’s too scary for us!” and he sees them down below at the fence looking and waving as he goes flying by and after the ride he heads back to his parents standing tall, feeling like a grown-up ....

The first time a couple is making love and it’s on their wedding night and they’re laughing not just because they waited, but because several of their friends joked that they hadn’t ....

The first time a person goes hiking in the mountains and after a long climb up, way up beyond the tree line, reaches the peak of a mountain and all is clear for miles around ....

The first time a retired airline pilot has the time to plant tomatoes after hearing from all his friends about their tomatoes and cucumbers and zucchini, and it’s September and everything is coming up tomatoes -- big, red, beautiful, juicy tomatoes ....

The first time a person goes on an airplane and everyone seems so relaxed and it seems that no one has a clue to how nervous I am right now ....

The first time a person experiences the presence of God: seeing a baby’s fingers or a red rose or a splashing rust orange sunset or a waterfall ....

The first time a person makes a double layer cake with icing or a loaf of bread or Jell-O ....

The first time a kid reads in public, at school or at church, and she is nervous and her Mom and dad are nervous, sitting down there, front row and center, holding hands and crying tears of joy and pride, as if their kid was mayor or governor or president giving her inaugural address ....
The first time a person realizes he or she is going to die, be placed in a box and buried in the earth....

The first time I’ll see the face of God ....

GENESIS

Every story has to begin somewhere and when the story begins, especially when it’s our story, we listen.

Once upon a time we began ....

Listen to the story -- the story of the Earth. It’s our story.

The Earth is filled with life. The Earth breathes. It’s breathing in and breathing out. Feel its breath. Feel the wind. Take its pulse. Catch its spirit. Walk in the garden in the cool of the evening.

Walk with God -- the God of Creation, the God of the Garden. Talk. Listen. Love. Give thanks.

Take off your shoes. Feel the Earth under your feet. It’s God’s creation, God’s gift. All is gift. All ground is holy ground.

Listen to the basic choices God gives us.

Listen to the basic warnings God gives us.

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil is in the Garden.

The tree of life is also in there.

God also gives us helpmates.

Talk. Communicate. Help one another. Make good choices.

Choose well.

Beware of snakes in the grass.

See the sparrows and the blackbirds. Watch the monkeys in the trees. Watch the willows wave in the wind. Watch the leaves fall in Autumn. Watch the snow in Winter. Watch for new life rising in Spring and flourishing in Summer.

Stand tall as rising wheat. Find time to look at the heavens. See the light. Stop to see the sun rise and the sun set. See the moon, the stars and the dark -- the vast vault of sky.

And all is good.

Stand still on the shores of Earth’s lakes and rivers, its seas and oceans. Water, water, everywhere .... Notice that the waters are like life: sometimes shallow, sometimes deep, very deep.

Come to the waters.

Walk into the water. Be careful in the shallow places. Life is everywhere -- if only we will see it. Go further. Dive deep into its depths. Be baptized in the waters of life. Know that we’re swimming in the ocean of God.

And all is good.

The Earth is interesting. Firm Earth, fluid waters ....

Life. Death. Time. My time. Am I having “the time of my life”?

Take time to read the story.

Listen. Just listen. Listen to what is happening on the Earth.

See this. See that.

And all is good.

LOVE IS OUTSIDE
THE NUMBERS



LOVE is outside the numbers.

Once people who love each other start counting, then something has died.

“I took the garbage out three times last week and you haven’t taken it out in the past two weeks.”

“Who’s counting?”

“I emptied out the dishwasher every morning this week and you haven’t done it once.”

“Who’s counting?”

“I helped with the kids’ homework at least a dozen times this new school year and I haven’t seen you do it yet.”

“Who’s counting?”

“But we made love three times this week already.”

“Who’s counting?”

“Three times in a row now you finished the toilet paper roll and didn’t replace it with a new one.”

“Who’s counting?” “

“Mom, that’s the third time this evening that you said, `Where’s my pocketbook?’ You must be getting senile.”

“Who’s counting?”

“I got up to answer the phone three times already this evening and you haven’t gotten up once.”

“I didn’t know we were counting.”

Peter came up to Jesus and asked, “Lord, when my brother wrongs me, how often must I forgive him? Seven times?” (Matthew 18:21).

And Jesus answered, “Who’s counting?”

“Two men went up to temple to pray: one was a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, with head unbowed, prayed in this fashion: `I give you thanks, O God, that I am not like the rest of men — grasping, crooked, adulterous — or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week. I pay tithes on all I possess’” (Luke 18:9-14)

And God said. “Who’s counting?”

“When those hired late in the afternoon came up they received a full day’s pay, and when the first group appeared they supposed they would get more; yet they received the same daily wage. Thereupon they complained to the owner, `This last group did only an hour’s work, but you have put them on the same basis as we who have worked a full day in the scorching heat.’ `My friend,’ he said to one in reply, `I do you no injustice. You agreed on the usual wage, did you not? Take your pay and go home. I intend to give this man who was hired last the same pay as you. I am free to do as I please with my money, am I not? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus the last shall be first and the first shall be last” (Matthew 20:1-16).

“In your prayer do not rattle on like pagans. They think they will win a hearing by the sheer multiplication of words” (Matthew 6:7)

And Peter told Jesus that he was hurt when he asked him three times, “Do you love me?” (John 21:15-19).

And Jesus said, “Who’s counting? Do you love me?”

WAITING:
TWENTY QUESTIONS

THE following are twenty questions for the next time you are looking for something to do while you are waiting.

1) Can women wait better than men? Babies take nine month to be born: planting the seed is much quicker.

2) Are farmers more patient than city folks? Do they find it easier to wait at banks and loan agencies? Waiting for seeds to grow and bud takes time, but so too does waiting for subways, buses, traffic, etc.

3) Is this generation more impatient than earlier generations? Do instant cereal, instant coffee, instant replay, microwave ovens, cable TV, video movies, instant copy machines, instant read-outs from computers, prevent people from learning how to wait?

4) Do couples without children miss out by not waiting up at night with a sick child, waiting for kids to grow, waiting for kids to come home safely from camp or the movies?

5) If you are or if you were a waiter or a waitress in a restaurant what would be the three most important things you would do to give good service to your customers?

6) If you broke your leg and had to sit around healing from four to six weeks, what would do with your time? Would it be a joyful break (pardon the pun) or would you “go bananas,” not knowing what to do with your time?

7) Still in the broken leg situation, what five books are you looking for time to read?

8) You are sitting waiting in a doctor’s waiting room and in walk the following three people: a teen-age girl on crutches, her foot in a cast; a woman who seems to be seven months pregnant; and a old lady in her seventies. Which of the three would you most likely give your seat to?

9) Or you’re in the same waiting room, but this time standing with those three people. Seated is an eighteen-year old boy, obviously into body building. Would you suggest to him that he offer his seat to one of the three persons?

10) Do you usually keep people waiting? Or are you usually on time? If you’re often late, do you do it to all people in all kinds of situations or is it usually to one person or one situation?

11) Do you answer mail or phone calls immediately, or are you a procrastinator, putting people off for hours, days and weeks?

12) When you pray, do you get restless? What’s your patience level? Do you get restless after ten, twenty, forty, or sixty minutes? What are your feelings about Jesus’ words, “Could you not watch with me for one hour?”

13) Why did Jesus wait till he was around thirty before he started moving around as a preacher?

14) Why did Jesus curse the fig tree in Matthew and not give it a second chance, while in Luke he gives it another year? Which is the real Jesus: the Jesus of Matthew or Luke?

15) Is there someone who is waiting for you to say to them, “I’m sorry for hurting you?”

16) Is there somebody you’re waiting to come to you and prove that they are sorry for hurting you?

17) Do you cheat, when you can, on waiting in line, trying to get ahead of others, in restaurants, at the shopping center, etc.? Do you believe in the principle of “first come, first serve”?

18) If you had cancer, would you be able to deal with all the waiting that is often involved: waiting to take tests, for the test reports, for good news? Would you be able to deal with losing hair, strength, movement?

19) You are in a barbershop or the hair dresser’s. You walk in without an appointment. Four persons are ahead of you. Would you be the type that would sit and wait, or would you leave and come back another time?

20) Looking at your life, what are the three most important things you are waiting for?

MANTRA: “Lord, teach me to learn to wait for what’s worth waiting for.”
