TREE

The ability to bend,
to sway back and forth,
to feel the wind,
to grow some more,
to feel the drip of rain,
the cold of snow,
years in the great outdoors,

watching people go by in the day,
looking up to see the stars of night,
winter, spring, summer, fall,
then the moment of decision:
“What would you like to be
for the rest of your life?”
Chair, table, floor, paper?
Church bench, cross, altar?
Or an inner beam
that holds up a house?
Do I have a choice
on what to do
with the rest of my life?
